Project Overview
In September 2021, FSG commenced an internal remodelling project at The Orchard Academy on behalf of Milton Keynes Council. The objective was to create additional SEN (Special Educational Needs) classrooms and associated teaching spaces within the existing school building. This was achieved by reconfiguring internal walls, relocating the central kitchen, and installing new WCs and an assisted WC for pupils.
Duration & Scale
The project was delivered in two distinct phases to minimise disruption to the school’s day-to-day operations. Works were scheduled strategically to coincide with school holidays, ensuring the safety and continuity of teaching activities.
Scope of Works
The project involved extensive internal alterations, mechanical and electrical installations, and the creation of purpose-built sensory learning environments:
- Phase One: Creation of three new sensory classrooms and separate sensory areas. The existing school kitchen was removed to make way for new pupil toilet facilities and an assisted WC.
- Demolition and reconstruction of wall partitioning to reconfigure internal spaces.
- Installation of acoustic ceiling boards with LED Sky panels to create calming sensory environments.
- Bespoke curved wall design in the main sensory room for quiet and soft play areas.
- Relocation of existing heating systems and full electrical rewire across new classrooms.
- Installation of a new mechanical extract system, electric Velux windows, drainage, and new fire doors.
- Repairs and overhauls to aluminium windows.
- Provision of new storage cupboards, base units, sink units, blinds, and full redecoration.
- New flooring installation including carpet and rubber matting.
- Installation of new drainage and hot/cold water supplies to serve new toilet facilities with sanitaryware, cubicles, hand dryers, and wash stations.
- Phase Two: Reconfiguration of the former sensory classroom into a new kitchen area. Works included the installation of electric Velux windows, drainage, new door frames, and internal wall adjustments.
- Repairs to the school courtyard decking, removal of disabled ramp and brick walls, and installation of a 6m x 2m steel canopy.
- Application of a non-slip coating to the decking, completed outside of school hours to ensure full drying time.
Asbestos Management & Safety
All works were carried out in accordance with school safety protocols and current health and safety legislation, ensuring a safe environment for both staff and pupils throughout the project.
